In this video, I wanted to show some traditional drawing techniques I’ve picked up over the years. How to hold a pencil, how to use a kneaded eraser, how to sharpen pencils etc… Stuff that’s not really glamorous but I think is useful knowledge anyway.
Special thanks to my camera lady Nancy Tsai!

Dood the 19th century called and they want their pencil sharpening
techniques back! In the next video will you show us how to use pen knives
to turn turkey feathers into dip pens to do our line work? =)
Seriously though, 2MM Lead Holders will expose as much lead as you need
with the push of a button. The graphite refills come in any hardness you
could desire, and engineering lead pointers will sharpen it in about two
seconds flat. Needle-sharp point not rustic enough? You can always fall
back on the trusty old sandpaper lead pointers that were in use before your
grandparents were born. Still faster (and safer) than whittling with razor
blades. Google or Amazon this stuff and at least catch up to early 20th
century techniques.
8:13 he said “doo-doo” ……. Ehehehheeee
It’s that a clay?
Awesome video Sycra, thank you for sharing these tips! 🙂 The basics may
look less glamorous but for the beginner, this basic stuff is really
important to learn. And I just found out I didn’t know how to properly use
a kneaded eraser or sharpen my pencils.
But, what really makes this video awesome is the relaxed approach you show
at the end… just sitting without any fancy equipment and drawing. It’s
really good for the beginner to learn to relax and just make drawing a part
of their day. Seeing how relaxed you are helps- at least for me. ;-)
my classmates laugh at me whenever they see my pencils sharpened like that
Your Hairstyle complements you here Sycra. Go with it for 2015 😉 Good
advices. Keep the good work going! Thumb uuuup.
@Sycra How much is your animation table?
Its so hard to buy one here, no one sells that kind of animation table. We
gotta make one ourselves.
i think its totally up to the artist how he or she wants to hold the
pencil.
He looks like Ray William Johnson….
this is the first time i’ve actually seen his face. It’s like i’ve seen the
unmasked daft punk :D
In Jesus’ name you’re healed.
i thought you’d look a bit like sethbling xD
Definitely learned a few things. You’re really kind to give these lessons.
What you give, will come back to you tenfold, I hope.
AMAZING HELP!
I didn’t know ray William and chilled had a baby tell your dads congrats
p.s. love your art
1:14 *paper falls down

Hello everyone! This Company is Paying Good Money for your Drawings!
http://bit.ly/1oqqUdx, no Matter the Experience you have, Thanks For Your
Time! Bye
Thanks ! Really interesting ! Your method for sharpening pencils is quite
useful, I’ve never managed to do it properly so far.
Well thats one way to sharpen a pencil.
Hmm… Very educational Sunny.
I always thought you where some genius white guy with short hair living in
a big room.
okay wait XD no one sharpens his pencil like that lol we just use a
sharpener
Brilliant video; very informative/educational. Lovely guy! +Sycra :-)
sandpaper pad to sharpen the lead portion.. or just purchase sheets of
sandpaper at the hardware store. Sorry if someone already mentioned this.
If you used a lead holder and lead pointer, you would have saved all the
trouble of using the knife to sharpen the point.
A lead holder is a mechanical pencil with 2mm leads that are the same
thickness as the leads of most wooden pencils. A lead pointer allows you to
sharpen the point, and even vary the length of the point.
hahaha i thought Sycra was white. So when i was watching the how to draw
hands vid, he did an, i guess indian/pakistani impression, where i thought,
thats kinda offending, like, to do such a random impression in a drawing
vid. haha it all makes sense now
God damn sharpening pencils like that makes life so much easier. I kept
getting down to the wood before. Also turning the pencil while drawing
helps a lot.
i always draw with 2B-4B and i make dark areas with 6B-8B
11:57 And when i go hard xD
Brilliant video; very informative/educational. Lovely guy! +Sycra :-)
I try doing those exercises but I’m always afraid that I’m wasting my
quality sketchpad paper by doing so… ;_;
He looks like raywilliamjohnson
I still sharpen my art pencil with a sharp blade, For me the lead can be
managed easier and tilt the pencil to a long slant with out the wood
interfering….I use a sharpener now and then but the blade is the best for
me.
I’m sorry but this is the the stupidest way I see to sharpen a pencil
alot of tissues
WHAT DO YOU CALL THAT DRAWING BOARD YOU’RE USING AN WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
the way he sharpens his pencil can I use the same technique with a normal
pencil?
I actually want to give it a shot and use a normal pencil as practice…
=w=
I think using sandpaper to sharpen the lead is a neat way.
I love traditional working!! >w< ♥
those sharpening techs helped out so much thank you haha
Hi Sycra, I’ve watched a couple of your videos and I’d like to thank you
for reminding me why I love to draw. I stopped drawing for a year and these
videos are as good as being in a class. I’ve learned so much already. I’ll
be a happy subscriber 🙂 Thank you.
I have a sharpener! 4:15
What’s your take on mechanical pencils?
harsh
