This drawing tutorial will show you some of the graphite and charcoal drawing pencils I use to render and shade my extremely realistic pencil drawings. I am the artist that produced “The Man Behind the Paper” and other realistic drawings that so many people are attempting to reproduce on the internet. Now I’m producing a series of videos that will show exactly how I create my amazing drawing illusions and portraits. This first video will show the amazing pencils I use that produce very dark shading with no grahite shine.
Most pencil artists begin with using just graphite. But graphite, by it’s very nature is incapable of producing extremely dark shading and when you try, it becomes very reflective. Graphite pencil’s limited value range, combined with this distracting reflectiveness can kill the realism you are trying to achieve. If you are attempting to put in extremely dark values, you are probably trying to represent an absence of light. The last thing you would want to do is have graphite shining in those areas that can look as bright as some of the highlights.
The graphite and charcoal pencils I mention in the video are made by General’s Pencil Company and can be purchased in a kit directly from my web site. More of my realistic drawings and tutorials can also be found on my web site here: http://www.jdhillberry.com If you are interested in more of these tutorials please up on my email list to be notified of upcoming drawing videos, workshops and pencil drawing tutorials from the link below.

Thanks again for your interest in my work!
JD Hillberry
quick question… instead of using dark pencils could i use ink instead….
and for the lighter parts use graphite??
Fabulous. Thanks so much. I’ve been worried about getting into using
charcoals, but now I can see how useful they can be. Time to learn to use
them!
Thanks so much for this .. I have one question.. I have a pretty high
paying commission and its to draw 2 horses and a girl, the
Problem is there’s a whole lot of shadows , and the horses are black.. I
have never used charcoal before but I was considering using it because
graphite leaves that glare , and since it’s basically an all “black”
drawing it wouldn’t look right. I wanted to know what I would be able to do
to add details to the “fur” of the horses because I’m very detailed about
my work .
Yes I received the pencil with the book and Kit Bonus Pack on Jan, 28 2015.
Teaching me after the DVD an reading the book????? I still have no Idea of
what you could teach a begginer like myself cause that DVD would have been
better to watch your youtube video an saved my money so could you tell me
what was your motivation other then money behind this sale not happy at
all. Ok now that I got this off my Chest the question I’m asking is I see

Post completed work, Receive teacher feed back would maybe show me more of
a understanding that would cost me another $240 more so please would you
take a few min. to explain
Wow, I am completely blown away. I’m getting back into drawing after a 10
year hiatus, and I just drew a graphite drawing last night. It looked
decent, but I was unimpressed with how lacking the dark values really were.
Never would have thought to use charcoal in combination with graphite.
Feels like a piece of the puzzle has been added to my drawing arsenal.
Thank you for this video!
glad i found this video , i have only recently started drawing , i’m
getting my sizes and shapes ok but my shading is letting me down , i guess
i need new equipment , i have been pressing down to hard and too lightly
🙂 thx JD
great video just packed with tips! Very appreciated thank you! Would you
ever consider using pen and ink for the darkest values (pupil and darkest
part of nostrils?) on a pencil drawing?
Your videos are so beautifully explained! Even a steadtler 8B and EE gives
a little bit of shine. You literally made me buy the idea that you must use
charcoal to get no shine in dark areas. Thank you very much!
I learned a lot, thanks. How do you get the smooth skin look? Do you use a
tissue paper for instance to smooth the shading?
Very helpful video! I sure learned a lot within the last 15 minutes :)
I’m a art student age 15 I’ve won a lot of awards for my art my drawings
are realistic but when I take a photo it reflects Thankyou for this
What do you think about Prismacolor Black Pencil?
Thanks to share this! The graphite shine has always been problematic.
Thanks for the video. I learned a lot. It was helpful :)
Thank you for this! I’m in love with the one in the background of the
beginning
You are a terrific artist and I look up to you so much!
I purchased the 2h 557 ex hard pencil but it is so hard it doesn’t really
adhere to the paper and/or it tears it. Should that be happening or did I
get a bad pencil?
So helpful, I am a young artist trying to create more realistic drawings,
this will definetly improve my drawings
This was amazing! So helpful!
It was a big Help :D
it is sooo helpful …..thank u sooo much
Hey jd hillberry im 12 ps this is my friends account and i do alot of art i
was hoping u can check it out on instagram me names thedannyhe
I never realized there was a way I could avoid that horrible glare (shine)
on the drawing by using charcoal pencils. I´ve never used them before, I
can’t wat to try them D:
I’m just wondering….How many years have you been drawing??Cuz I love each
of your masterpiece..They look realistic…
you’re awesome
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve been using graphite for so long I
didn’t know why my drawings weren’t coming out as realistic as I wanted
them to. Now I see charcoal and graphite are like brothers. They compliment
each other so well that it shows in the drawing. Really helps that you
showed and explained where to use the charcoal as well since I’m not to
keen on how or where to use it. Thanks again for this in depth video and I
hope you continue to help teach more techniques.
I really like your work! I believe that you’re much better than a lot of
famous artist out there.. I just think you deserve more fame. Your videos
are very informative and helpful. I improved a lot by learning from your
videos. I used to only use a #2 pencil and didn’t realize the range of
values I was missing. Your drawing kit is all I use now. Thanks a lot! I
have one question. How long does it take you to finish a drawing? It
usually takes me 8-15 hours.
Oh agreed, but that is what i usually do, high contrast. Actually I use 4-5
pencils…very light, light, medium, dark, and very dark, affixing the
layers as i go.
When you’re shading glass or smooth metal objects, do you often layer
graphite over charcoal in the darker areas, or does it depend on what your
doing in other areas of the drawing? Like, the background or other objects?
And, do you ever blend the charcoal before adding the graphite?
THIS IS INCREDIBLY Helpful!
Realistic Pencil Drawing Techniques by JD Hillber…:
http://youtu.be/Xpz4-0MVrTg
I’ve been drawing for around 16 years (since the age of 2), and just in the
last 3 years I’ve been learning new ways to draw more realistically. I
actually just recently made a drawing that required a dark black shade to
it…but ended up with that glare you were talking about and it really
annoys me. Thank you so much for this video! It helped me out, and I’m
gonna be checking out your website!
Another super subtle portrait, thank you!
So I got a small case of pencils the range from 8B to 2H I believe and
they’re all graphite. Should I be looking to pick up several different
charcoal pencils or is just one good enough to get good contrast and
darkness and avoid the graphite shine.
He’s a crazy artist!
Great job sir!
I want to go to college and work on something like this..
:/ but i dont know yet which school should i go..
I live in Austin Tx and i dont know yet..
I’m planning to do tattoos soon, but i also want to learn how to draw more
and more realistic..
I want to sell drawing and make tattoos etc..
This is the only think i enjoy doing, but it’d what college should i go :(
I didn,t understand this very well and the reason why is that if charcoal
is very dark how can u use charcoal for skin texture if the skin texture
looks lighter than the charcoal ,however your drawing are awesome!
Wow, you are incredibly good. Thank you for the video.
Your works are really good (and it’s not so common here) my
congratulations:)
at 5:26, can someone please explain to me? graphite is a form of carbon,
but he said that the kimberly 9xxb has added carbon. this makes no sense to
me.
Wish I had a teacher like him.. Best art I’ve seen!!
very helpful video, thank u sir
wow, man. Thanks a lot.
that shading is such a chore, probably would be good to use off white paper
with white colored pencils
Jesus.. Ten minutes to explain graphitise no good… Fml…
Wow you really are a master with the pencil. Your subjects must be
over-the-moon with the quality of your portraits.
Jd hillberry ur realy superb and awesome…
I want to go to a school that teach you how to draw realistic, but i still
dont know which one..
Idk
That was really helpful and your a terrific artist! Do you have any videos
on drawing realistic hair? That is the area that i really have a hard time
drawing
Does the same apply to using Graphite power/ Charcoal powder? Is there
still a shine when using Graphite powder.
